Our love affair with Hayes Valley continued to blossom last weekend as we took an urban field trip to the Hayes Valley Farm.
This lush and lovely oasis in the city is a temporary farm that makes its home on a former freeway off-ramp. Visitors are encouraged to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty by planting seeds, shoveling soil, or helping with one of the many seasonal work events.
We loved the children’s garden and seed library, and spent oodles of time making original art with adorable stamps made from fresh-cut fruit. The farm even hosts a bee aviary, and visitors can buy super-local, freshly-jarred honey onsite.
Every first and third Sunday stop in for nature crafts and sign up to volunteer. If you have small children they are encouraged to jump in and volunteer as well. Families can check out those bees in the aviary, some native plants for sale, and many beautiful structures made from re-purposed shipping pallets. Or you can just relax in the comfy hammock or in one of the cozy little nooks around the farm. Don’t worry if your knowledge of plants and gardening is still a little green. The staff and volunteers are all knowledgeable, kind, and ready to help.
The only drawback to Hayes Valley Farm is that the facility is temporary and it won’t stay in its current space for long. When the property owners decide to build on the site it will go away. So get out there and get some soil under your nails while you can!
